Social Studies Project for Second Grade Plimoth Plantation-Mayflower Project Due Date Wednesday,April 28thth
Dear Parents, The second grade will be studying about Plimoth during May and June to get ready for their field trip to Plimoth Plantation on Monday, June 14th. This year students in grades K-8 will take part in the Social Studies Fair which will be held on Wednesday, April 28th. I think this will be a great learning experience for the children. The second grade topic will be the "Mayflower". I am sending home a project for you to do with your child. There will be two parts to this project. The first part will be making the model of the Mayflower. I have included the instructions on how to build the model. Your child will need your help with the cutting and taping the model together. (Please have your child color the model before cutting it out. Remind them to use their best coloring. Color pencils work the best for this part of the project!) After they have made the model they need to make a background for their ship on the piece of white construction paper. Their ship will go into the box which they will need to decorate as an ocean. Please have your child use their imagination for the background and for the ocean. (I have provided the paper for the background but you need to provide the box for the ocean.) The second part is to make a display board to show 15-20 facts about the Mayflower. The display board can be purchased at Walmart-Staples-CVS. The children can either print their facts neatly on the display board or type them out on a computer. They should also include several pictures on the display board. The pictures can be either hand drawn or pictures taken from the internet. They should have a title for their display board. (For example: My Facts about the Mayflower) Please be sure that your child's display board is done neatly and is colorful!
Your child might enjoy going on the following web site with your help. http://www.scholastic.com/scholastic_thanksgiving/voyage/tour.htm On this site they can watch the journey that the pilgrims took and take a tour of the Mayflower. I have also included several good web sites that your child can use to get their 10-15 facts about the Mayflower. Please go on the web with them! If you have any questions please feel free to ask me! Good Luck and Have Fun with this project! Thank you, Ms. Curran
